Lost in Translation 2: Don't Call Me That
As a a human being I show respect as much as I command respect as a woman, and as an African-American. I do not use the infamous "N-word" nor do I like to use the word ghetto and if I do say it I feel guilty. One word I do not and will not identity myself as is "minority" it is unacceptable and is nothing more than a professional way to insult someone who is not "White." In this post I am going to explain the definition of the word and shed insight from another source.
African American Legendary Actor Billy Dee Williams |
What is the base behind the word minority mean? The base word of minority is "minor" and the dictionary defines minor as: "inferior in dignity, rank or importance.... inferior in number, quantity or extent."
Puerto Rican Baseball Player Roberto Clemente |
Why is it offensive to me? Writers, intellectuals and media often refer to African-Americans, Latinos, and other people of color as minorities, but it is an inappropriate term.
John N. Doggett says " I'm not a minority; I'm an American I am not a victim; I'm a victor." Doggett also had this to say: "Think about the meaning of the word minority. There is nothing positive about it. Minority shareholder, minority rights or minority party. All mean the same thing: You have no power. Well I don't accept that that. So I refuse to allow anyone to call me a minority."
Italian Former Model and Actor Antonio Sobato Jr. |
I feel as though it is foolish to label people that have a certain color of skin a minority when almost everyone person within the Unites States of America's population is a descendant of people that come from Ireland, England, Italy, France, all forms of Europe. The Native Americans and Hispanics are the original indengious people to the US soil if you pay attention and analyze history. For example almost every city in the states of Texas and California have spanish names Flordia as well.Africans were pretty much the only group of people that did not want to be in America although the first Africans that arrived in America were not slaves they were indentured servants.
Native American Actor Taylor Lautner |
So that would almost make everyone a minority but since people have tried to get specific I had to shed some kind of knowledge. My main point is the word is offensive and I urge others not to call themselves or their peers this name. If we want to get real about everyone person has color so we are all "colored" people.

Grass Isn't Always Greener on the Other Side
What is a heterosexual? A person sexually attracted to persons of the opposite sex. Or a person who has sexual relations with the opposite sex. Colloquially known as "straight."
Recently one of my favorite CNN news anchors Don Lemon has announced publicly that he is gay so basically he came out of the closet in other words and I am respect him and I am happy for him. Recently Don has had numerous interviews promoting his new book and discussing his sexuality. One thing that caught my attention was Don Lemon said "Yes the Black Community is homophobic." I disagree with that statement and that statement and many other opinions and perceptions gave me inspiration to write this blog posts.
Why do people hate heterosexuals? Why do some people feel as though as heterosexuals are evil? These are a couple of questions I am curious about. Also I want to provide some insight or words of clarity. I actually typed into the search engine of Google saying Why do people hate heterosexuals? Let's just say I saw a lot of backlash.
Sad Loner from Kansas City, MO said " I wouldn't say that I hate heterosexuals...I just simply dislike them because the way they are. They are heteroist, homophobic, control freaks, the decide what I can and can't do as a gay man, they think that they are superior, straight couples make me feel uncomfortable and I actually panic if a straight couple is near me. I'm extremely jealous of them because I can't be like them... I dislike them because they owe this I could go on forever...and so many reasons to dislike heteros."
Toni Words aka My Response: I am sorry that you feel that way although I am a heterosexual woman and I will not make any apologies for being who I am. I am what I am. There are struggles in your life that you have dealt with and will continue to deal with and the same thing goes for me. For the record I don't feel that way about gay people and ironically sometimes I feel like the gay population is larger than the straight population but you won't and don't see make making post saying "Do you hate homosexuals?"
Another person made a comment in response to Sad Loner's comment; Blue Dog from Truman, AR said this " What I hate is for people to try to make an issue over their sexuality and then cram it down everyone else that is NOT of their orientation's throat. That's what I hate. Why don't you just live and let live and don't worry about what straights think of you? If it didn't bother you, and you didn't know in your heart (conscious) that you are wrong in the first place, you wouldn't make an issue out of it stop trying to get to attention for yourself."
Toni Words aka My Response: Well its clear that you feel strongly opposed to his comments and lifestyle I guess. I agree with him when he says this guy shouldn't be concerned about straight people have to say because then you will never truly be happy.
I will touch basis with the Don Lemon situation in another post. I just want people to realize that is is not easy being heterosexual or straight either because the older I get the more and more I witness and realize people dislike people just like me. Let's just keep it real and understand this some people are going to taunt, tease, and hate, boys and girls; men and women for any and everything whether it be the individual is tall, short, skinny, fat, so yes that does include people having issues with another person's sexuality. Does that make it right not it does not. Everyone knows right from wrong.
Its apparent that straight people are disliked and hated the same way people within the gay community are disliked an hated although maybe not that the extent gays are hated I guess. I think more research and conversation needs to be sparked to really here both sides. Straight people are human beings as well we laugh, cry, eat, sleep, shit and die. Also some straight people will never understand how a gay person is gay, and some gay people will never understand straight people. Not all straight people are evil nor are they all innocent but all of us aren't bad that's something I really want to make very clear.

It's Simple as 1,2,3,4!
Some things in life are just simple and some people are just simple. Although I think it is fair to say that there is nothing simple about Beyonce' especially this year. She is truly all grown up she is approaching her 30th birthday this fall. It has been 3 years since Beyonce' released her third solo album 2008's I Am Sasha Fierce.
So why has she taken a break? That's an easy answer the girl never has a time to sit on her ass and relax I mean sure she has achieved and she is living her childhood dream but I am sure all that work is very demanding. But if you pay attention this isn't the first time she has released an album within a three span. Her first solo album was released in Summer 2003, Sophomore solo album released in Fall 2006, and third solo album Fall 2008. It's just that she stays on tour for a long time and that is a smart move because tours are bread and butter. In the music industry the artist gets paid last so you need to turn yourself into a brand write your own music, produce your own music, or rack endorsements and tour to keep the Feds and the label off your ass.
What has she done during the break? “I’m approaching 30, and finally took a break in my life, which I’ve never had. I took more than a year off: I traveled around, spent time with my husband, woke up in my own bed, ate whatever I wanted, went to museums and Broadway plays, watched documentaries, and just had life experiences. I never get to go to concerts because I’m usually performing, so I saw so many shows—great bands, like Muse and Rage Against the Machine, that also inspired the album. There were a lot of artists I’d never been exposed to: I’m like a sponge and soak everything up, and I learned so much from watching these great performers.”
Why is her father no longer her manger? Beyonce' says: "It's not that anything bad happened between us. My family has my support always, and they support me, but when you've been working with the same people for 15 years, it's natural to eventually have your own ideas," she told Billboard. "I believe that parents prepare their kids for the moment that they're on their own: at this point, I'm taking everything my dad and my mother have taught me, and I'm able to do things my way. We were at a point where we'd learned so much from each other, and now it's exciting for me to do this on my own and hire my own team. I've started managing myself."
Why is the new album entitled 4? Beyonce' says "It’s 4, as in … yes, her fourth solo album. But she says it has other significance, too: “We all have special numbers in our lives, and 4 is that for me. It’s the day I was born. My mother’s birthday, and a lot of my friends’ birthdays, are on the fourth; April 4 is my wedding date.”
Final Word: “Having time to grow as a human being was really inspiring, and gave me a lot to pull from. I’m excited about growing: I can just have fun, and the artistic freedom to do whatever I want. At this point, I really know who I am, and don’t feel like I have to put myself in a box. I’m not afraid of taking risks – no one can define me.”
My Final Thoughts: Beyonce' is still my girl I love a person that is passionate about their craft and they have the chance to live their dream its very inspiring and fulfilling. I admit I do not like that single Who Runs the World (Girls) but I'm glad she recycled her song "Get Me Bodied" and released "Move Your Body." The song is apart of the Get Fit campaign something being endorsed by First Lady Michelle Obama and Beyonce' was asked to help endorse and participate so that is the purpose behind "Move Your Body." I really like the video and the song I can do it the gym. If she wants to retire after this its all good she has a strong work ethic she is an entertainer she does her job very well. I still apart of Team Beyonce' I 'm loyal until the casket drops.

Topics on Deck
Ladies and gentleman I am so busy my second year of college is ending so you know what that means finals exams and whole nine yards. Although I wanted to give out the spoiler alert topics on deck meaning behind the word minority, interracial dating from the Black woman's standpoint, Hispanics in US, and HBCU's and books I recommend for reading. In the meantime my next post is about Beyonce' and what's going on with her.

The Birthday Boy
Today is Cinco de Mayo the day that Mexico became and independent country but here in America today is the day singing sensation Christopher Maurice Brown was born in the small town of Tappahannock, Virginia to Joyce Hawkins and Clinton Brown. Since his childhood music has been present and a major part of his life he would listen to his parents soul albums. He was inspired by artists such as Michael Jackson, Usher, Sam Cooke just to name a few. Like many young people of his generation he wanted to become a rapper but his mother realized he had real vocal and dancing talent after mimicking an Usher performance he saw on television.
Chris has released four solo albums since his career began in 2005 at the age of 16. His latest single "She ain't You" is receiving a positive buzz he just shot the video. It is dedicated to the late great Micheal Jackson it samples Jackson's song "Human Nature" and SWV's cover of the song as well "Right Here." Happy Birthday Chris have a good one.
