The show was originally produced in Harlem, New York, and the title is derived from the original studio location at East 106th Street and Park Avenue. Viacom's acquisition of BET prompted a change in venue to the CBS Broadcast Center at 524 West 57th Street, in the Hell's Kitchen section of Manhattan.
The show has received criticism, along with its network BET, over the subject matter of the music videos contained within the show. Hosting changes have also been met with lukewarm response from the audience.
Although 106 and Park began as promotion vehicle for Hip-Hop and R&B artists the show has diversified with having pop stars on the show as Lady Gaga, Madonna, as well as Hollywood superstars such as Tom Cruise and Vince Vaughn. One thing I can say I have enjoyed over the years is coverage of world news and a series of unfortunate events such as 9/11 terrorists attacks, Hurricane Katrina, and the Earthquake in Haiti. Each year on World Aids Day the show focuses on HIV and AIDS prevention and tests.
It seems as though BET has hit many milestones and is going back to basics and I'm glad about that. 10 years of an outstanding awards show, 30 years as a network and 10 years of 106 the number one show. After AJ and Free left in 2005 Rap City's The Basement Big Tigger hosted the show with Julissa. Terrence and Rosci have been holding it down since.
Bow Wow is "Mister 106 and Park" while the late Aaliyah was crowned "Miss 106 and Park" these artists have had their videos retired more than any other singers or rappers on the show. Let's hope that we are able to have many more seasons of 106 and Park. Blow out the candles and eat the cake!!!!!!!!
